CursiveLogic - Quick Start Pack and The Art of Cursive Review

We recently had the opportunity to review The CursiveLogic Quick-Start Pack ($49.00) and The Art of Cursive ($15.95) from CursiveLogic.

Unfortunately teaching cursive writing has become a lost art.  This is definitely a skill though that I wanted all of our kids to have.  Even if they can not write in cursive due to fine motor issues, I still want them to learn cursive so that they can read it.  Lydia though is the only one so far that loves using cursive.  Then I come to the point, of what program do I pick?  There's not really a lot of options right now, besides just printing boring worksheets.  And then I had bad writing habits that I have developed over the years, so how do I teach her?

The CursiveLogic Quick-Start Pack has been a great addition to our homeschool.  When you order this pack, not only do you get a full instructional workbook, but you also receive an hour long seminar on how to teach it.

At first I wasn't sure how to proceed...I mean do we just get started in the writing, since Lydia has already been learning cursive.  The CursiveLogic Quick-Start Pack workbook does contain information on how to get started.  So I decided to start assigning out pages for Lydia to work on while I watched the seminar.  I just followed the simple instructions on encouraging the words while writing the strokes.

Lydia seems to be doing very well.  The CursiveLogic approach is to teach a series of letters that have similar shapes and strokes.  As the student masters this stroke, they continue adding all the strokes together to form words.  The student start with learning lower case first and then upper case is added.  Ultimately, a student will be able to learn the entire alphabet in a short amount of time, usually in just a few weeks.  Taking not only the knowledge of how to form each letter, but then also forming any words they will be writing.

As I watched the seminar though, I realized that Lydia would benefit greatly from watching it also.  So while playing a board game, Lydia joined me in a second viewing of the writing seminar.  It's about an hour long, and as we watched the example strokes that they were teaching, Lydia (a visual person) was able to really see the strokes being made by someone other than myself.

The layout of the CursiveLogic Writing workbook is so easy to use.  It's really is amazing.  Each stage is color coded for easy introduction.  Lydia's cursive writing has greatly improved as she has reviewed and continued to adjust her writing style.  Bad habits that were starting to develop have taken a backseat as she has progressed through each color level of CursiveLogic.

So why buy the The CursiveLogic Quick-Start Pack instead of another system.

1.  Students learn a new system that helps them to remember the path their pencil needs to make as they are forming the letter groups.  This helps students with their motor skills and helps both visual and auditory learners.
2.  Strings of letters are grouped together to teach connection from the start
3.  Because of the letters being grouped together by shape, it has the students learn how to string their letters into words.
4.  Short lessons, which is wonderful when dealing with short attention spans like we do.

A bonus that we have received from CursiveLogic was the opportunity to try out their latest release, The Art of Cursive.

The Art of Cursive is actually targeting older students and adults.  It is not a full cursive curriculum.  There are suggestions on writing strokes, and this does help students to "fine tune" and practice their skills in an ultra fun environment.  Lydia and I both used The Art of Cursive pages.  It is an adult coloring book style with lots of loops, curves and slants.  All the loops, curves and slants that they are coloring all boil down to the letter formation styles that they were just learning in their CursiveLogic workbook.  This is a great next step for the student who is learning cursive.  You can see one of our coloring pages below.

There are 27 lessons in The Art of Cursive.  Here are two more examples that we worked on.  You can see the style is great for not just adults, but older students.

The CursiveLogic Quick-Start Pack ($49.00) and The Art of Cursive ($15.95) from CursiveLogic are great additions to your homeschool.  They can take the stress off of teaching cursive writing to your student and even give you a little extra time together if you want to also work on the coloring pages with them.

As a special bonus, CursiveLogic is offering our readers a 20% off special through the end of March.  Simply use the coupon code - CREW2018 when checking out.

Channie’s Visual Handwriting & Math Workbooks - One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook Review

Let's be honest, most kids need a little extra practice to grasp concepts.  We recently had the opportunity to review the One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook from Channie's Visual Handwriting & Math Workbooks.  This was the little bit of extra practice that helped Caty get back on her level.

Some days it's really hard to homeschool.  Life happens.  Distractions happen.  Sometimes it's special needs that need that extra practice.  Well we had all of that happen to us over the summer.  Caty was a bit behind in her double digit math.  She saw the concept, but definitely needed some extra practice with this skill.

This consumable workbook provides students with roughly 25 problems each day for them to practice double digit addition and subtraction.  It starts out with no carryover/borrowing, and then as your student works their way through the book and masters basic double digit math, it advances to addition carryover and subtraction borrowing.

How did we use this product?  Right along side her math curriculum that Caty has been using.  We plan on spending through December reviewing basic concepts that Caty was struggling with in early elementary Math, so we are using Life of Fred and Living Math in combination.  The Channie's Visual Handwriting & Math Workbooks - One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook has slipped right into this combination as if it was specifically created to go in our program of study.  As I am reading her lesson to her from Life of Fred, she works on her worksheet to practice skills.

(Bet you can't tell what her favorite September homeschool outfit has been....lol)  Each worksheet takes her roughly 15 minutes to complete.  Obviously the first few she zoomed through very quickly due to the simplicity of the problems.  But as she had to do more steps, she had to force herself to slow down and work on those steps.  The One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook has really helped her to get the practice she needs to conquer what she felt were monumental problems preventing her from moving on to her 4th grade math study.

The problems are color coded for your child to easily separate the numbers, as well as "grided" so they can match them up easier.  I know this style was easiest for Joey to use as he was adding in extra columns to add and subtract.  When you have a student who is dyslexic or has visual processing problems, this math style works out great to help them!

You can choose to either tear the sheet out of the workbook or we just left them attached inside, and kept all the practice sheets together.  The workbook is not spiral bound, tear apart at the top.  But Caty was easily able to flip the pages over and it stayed open.

The One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook was created for Grades 1 - 3.  I highly recommend that if your student is even in an upper grade and is struggling, use this resource.  It's that repetition that will help them to get into their own pattern for solving the problems, and the layout is great for visual delays.

Now the One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook is strictly a practice workbook.  It is not meant to "teach" your student how to do the math printed.  So if you are looking for pages filled in with instructions, this is not that book.  But if you want to teach your child the non-common core way of solving problems, you would definitely want to use this workbook.  You could easily get them started on the problems and then let them finish the page each day.

This 50 page book - which is only $12.95, would save you a lot of time and money on printer ink also!!  I wish I would have had this for the boys a few years ago.  Would've really helped us out with daily practice.

The Art of CursiveLogic Preview Review

We recently had the opportunity to preview a exciting and new creation from CursiveLogic, The Art of CursiveLogic.  CursiveLogic recently debuted their next project through a KickStarter Campaign.

I was intrigued by the Kickstarter Campaign and signed on right away.  We got the opportunity to try out a few pages that they sent to us to preview.  Lydia was very excited.  She had out her multi-color erasable pens and was ready to go.

She absolutely loves the designs with each skill level.  With each level, you are shown how to complete strokes and given practice pages. Your student can practice on this page, and sometimes a few more pages.  Followed by even more practice in a beautiful coloring page.  At first Lydia didn't realize she was actually practicing her cursive.  Then it dawned on her that she was happily writing in cursive while she was "coloring" the page.

Everyday I found her practicing her cursive writing pages, and begging to continue practicing even when her other work needed to be finished.

If you would like to see what this new and innovative way of encouraging your child's cursive handwriting, check out this Kickstarter from CursiveLogic for more information.
