Little Cloud by Eric Carle --- stART project of the week

I saw a project similar to this posted on another blog, Adventures in Mommy Land.  She has some wonderful ideas!  The girls love to paint, so I thought what a great idea.

First I mixed up the paint in the morning before school started for the day.  I decided on puffy paint, but I really cannot stand the smell of the puffy paint that is made with glue and shaving cream.  So I searched around and found this recipe from Perpetual Preschool that I kind of played with a little.

Puffy Paint
1 cup flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
Powdered tempra paint in your color choice.

You mix it all and you can refrigerate it for a couple days.  I added white liquid tempra because that is what I had.  I do have some powdered colors also, and may try that in a couple weeks for a project.  I wasn't sure how it would turn out.  Just before we started painting though, I had to add a little water because the mixture had gotten thick and I threw a few teaspoons of baking powder also....hey we were painting clouds we wanted fluffy!!!

I read the book and we talked about the different kinds of shapes and things we think we saw in the clouds.  And then I let them create.  The girls just got silly and since I got out the glitter too....wow they had fun!  The boys each created a favorite Pokemon character that they think they could spot in the clouds.  I thought they did a great job.

The girls made several paintings and experimented with small, thin paint brushes to very large paint brushes.  We also practiced dripping the paint off of spoons and looking at the patterns that we could make while smoothing it around with the back of the spoon.

She loves to paint but every drop she got on her fingers was like a small crisis.

It was messy and fun.  It will be a while before all the glitter will be gone from the carpet.  And yes I had to strip Punky down because she had the "paint" all over her clothes.  Good thing it was mainly flour and water and the paint I added was washable.

It was a fun end to our school week and then we enjoyed sitting down together and watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to stay in with the theme of Clouds!

  3. Puffy paint made with flour dries more durable than what is made with shaving cream. It didnt get extra puffy (even with the extra baking powder I threw in). It made the paper heavy, so they were hard to hang up. But there was no "fragrence".
