Homeschool Mother's Journal - Week 11

In my life this week....

Washer broke down....yuck, and we are just chugging along on schoolwork.  I have a daily struggle because of not feeling well.  I am researching diets and homeopathic solutions to various issues.  I can't cut out too much more food than just not eating, and that's not an option.  I just am trying to get through each day right now.  Lots and lots of praying for strength to keep going and patience to help the kids.

Still waiting to hear from the specialist.  I'm guessing that the family doctor never sent over the proper paperwork.  Shocker there!!  I am running to the hospital where I got the bloodwork initially done and getting a copy of all the labs.  Need to just take a more aggressive approach, after all I am the one that feels horrible all the time....they are not!

The boys are resisting independent work, and I really need to them do some work on their own.  Between outside activities and working with the girls, I am ready to lose my mind.  I always make myself available for help and questions.  But there is a difference between not understanding how to complete an activity and the decision to just not complete an assignment because you think your video games are more important.

In our homeschool this week....

We are talking about ants, and watching our ants finally start to build tunnels in the farm.  At first it seemed as if they were just moving sand around for the fun of it and never going to build any tunnels.  The kids were disappointed so far.  Now with the tunnels being built they are excited again.

We have been busy with reviews also.  Lots of cool products to try out.

We have our final meeting on Kaya for American Girl Club.  We are visiting a local historical museum to see a Native American village display.

We missed a trip to the zoo because of the washer.  But we may get to go to Cedar Point again this Friday, so pretty excited about that.  Just waiting on the weather and make sure everyone is ok.

What I am reading......

A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book OneThe Paleo Solution: The Original Human DietThe Paleo Diet Cookbook: More than 150 recipes for Paleo Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, Snacks, and BeveragesDiscover Your Child's Learning Style: Children Learn in Unique Ways - Here's the Key to Every Child's Learning Success

What's working/not working for us.....

Daily Click N Read Phonics lessons are not currently.  They are working (we are using Looney Tunes), but not daily.  I found this great Site word program (through another TOS Crew member...I'll post about it tomorrow) and she is enjoying that right now.  So we will be doing computer phonics every other day and practice our site words daily.

Caty begged and begged for the new UmiZoomi Math program that they have been advertising on TV.  So I gave in and bought it.  The math is below Lydia's level, but she's like the DVDs too.  So we are working on the program with Caty and Lydia is watching the DVDs too.

I'm cooking....

We are going to try and adjust our eating to the Paleo style.  So reading books and cookbooks.  Gradually planning our menu and going to adjust as many meals as possible to this lifestyle.  Basically no gluten and very little starch such as white potatoes and rice.  We are going to try to adjust the majority to this.  Not for weight loss, but for health reasons.

Picture for the week....

She made her own sandwich....She pressed marshmallows between bread.  Lol!!  She would be my one that would make scrambled eggs with chocolate chips and sprinkles!

Have a great week!!!

  1. Can totally relate about worrying about video games to much and just not reading directions on school work. I was thinking about buying the umi zoomi math too! Let me know how it goes.

I hope you find out what's making you not feel well! I can understand. I haven't felt myself since mid-June! (They're thinking environment allergies like pine and grass.)

  3. Renita been praying for your health issues. However may I offer a suggestion about video games? My oldest was about to drive me insane with it last year and I was about to throw the thing out the window... However after talking to some other homeschool momma's we decided to only have game days on m, w, friday and saturday. However that didn't last very long because he would hurry through his work to get to play for his alotted time that day... So this is what we have been doing for almost a year... Games may only be played on Friday after 12 noon anytime Saturday(2 hours max) and Sunday(2 hours max) thats it. Thats between all 3. Its worked wonderful, cause there is no hurry to finish or well half way finish work threw the week they only are allowed to play when school isn't in -- the weekend!! Maybe that could help you?? Also about the independent issues... Do you use workboxes? Email me :) xoxo

  4. Hang in there, Renita. I'm so sorry about the washer. Goodness, laundry just seems to take on a life of its own! We have ALL been there sometime or another where we feel overwhelmed with our homeschooling situation. I will pray for you and your health as well. As for the video games, my little guy would LOVE to just bounce from one electronic device to another, but thankfully before he was even able to walk, I came up with a "rule" that no electronics may be used until after 4:00 pm, unless they are using the computer or iPad for school related activities, or the Wii for Wii Fit Plus. It really has been a wonderful thing because they can't change the clocks, ha ha! Thank you for sharing.
