Words Bright - S Is For Smiling Sunrise Book Review

I love kids picture books.  Even if my kids don't like the book, I know I will sit and look at them even.  When I go to the book store, I spend more time in the kids section than I do looking for something for myself.  This can be good and bad.  I love to share books with new parents also.  Parents usually get tons of clothes, both new and hand-me-downs for their kids.  But how many new parents think of books for their little ones?  I was very excited when we got a chance to review S Is For Smiling Sunrise by Vick Wadhwa from WordsBright.

We have a struggling reader in our house.  She doesn't remember her letter sounds and so this really causes her reading struggles.  But most alphabet books seem babyish to her.  So I gave up reading alphabet books to her.  We had been trying alphabet songs instead, but I wanted to be able to keep reading to her so she gets more experience with seeing words on the page.

S Is For Smiling Sunrise is a full-color alphabet book that connects character training with learning the alphabet and letter sounds.

It also includes a cute, downloadable "alphabet song" to sing along with your book.  Your child can follow along and they can sing along too.

We have been using S Is For Smiling Sunrise a few times a week, a minimum of 2 days a week.  I use both the alphabet song and the books with Caty.  This book has been a great addition to our reading.  And best of all, Caty is memorizing the little rhymes and she has been able to remember more of her letter sounds when I mention R is for Rainbow or L is for Leaves.

I also like that this book includes words that help kids to increase their vocabulary.

Each page also features upper and lower letter forms, so you can also work with your kids on the upper and lowercase recognition.  You can look at more pages by visiting the "Look inside" page of the WordsBright website.

Each book purchase also includes a downloadable teacher's guide that gives parents/caregivers ideas on how to work with their student and S Is For Smiling Sunrise.  It includes suggested questions to help your student focus on each page and get the most out of it.

We will continue using S Is For Smiling Sunrise along with Caty's reading/phonics assignments each week.  Caty is enjoying the "big girl" alphabet book and learning so much.  She is even creating little hand motions to do with some of the letters as we read it each time, such as hopping when we are on the P - Park page and making an arch with her arms for the R - Rainbow page.

As we have been enjoying this book so much, I began realizing what a great present this would make for new parents.  It's a hard-cover book and it's made sturdy.  (It's been packed in and out of our suitcases several times now.)  The price is very reasonable, only $16.95.  It might be chew worthy for a baby, but it's a great sit on your lap and cuddle book for toddlers and preschoolers.

Several members of the Schoolhouse Review Crew were given the opportunity to use S Is For Smiling Sunrise in their homes.  Take some time to read how they used this in their homes by visiting the Review blog at the link below.
