Awaywegomedia.com - Carole P. Roman History Series

We are fans of Carole P. Roman's geography series.  So I was very excited to get the opportunity to review her If You Were Me and Lived in....history series.  They generously provided us with copies of If You Were Me and Lived in....Viking Europe, If You Were Me and Lived in....the Middle Ages (An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time Volume 6), If You were Me and Lived In....Renaissance Italy (An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time Volume 2), and If You Were Me and Lived in.....Ancient China: The Han Dynasty.  The If You Were Me and Lived In.... series is brought to you by Carole P. Roman and Awaywegomedia.com.

Caty loves anything to do with Asia.  So the title If You Were Me and Lived in.....Ancient China ($15.99) immediately drew her in.  The illustrations in this title are very simple and yet eye-catching.  The colors keep the mind at ease, which is a big deal when you have a child who has some sensory issues.

This 70 page book really delves in Ancient China in an informative way that is definitely on a kids level.  If they were not sure about a word, a glossary is even included at the back of the book.

We were not actually studying Ancient China right now, but this really opened up an interest for her.  We have been using a fun-schooling journal that allows for interest-led learning.  If You Were Me and Lived in.....Ancient China filled in the goal for this perfectly.  Caty and I would read so many pages each day, and then fill out pages about what we learned.  A few of the illustrations inspired her to build a Chinese home in her Minecraft game.

With Caty's comprehension level, we did read If You Were Me and Lived in.....Ancient China together, and worked on her work together.  So even if your child is a little delayed, these Carole P. Roman history series will make a great addition to your studies.  I found that this story would not only make a great addition to history curriculum, but could also be used for stand-alone studies also.  Cultures, housing, foods, government and so much more is covered in this title.   If You Were Me and Lived in.....Ancient China really took us back to the time of Ancient China, the only thing we were missing was the clothing (oh and we should have read it by candlelight).

We also were read If You Were Me and Lived in....Viking Europe ($16.99).  Recently Joey has been reading a new series on Noris gods.  So I thought what a great addition to his fun reading, learning what life was really like in Viking Europe.

This 76-page story, just like the other stories in the Carole P. Roman history series, can be used alone or along-side your history curriculum.  Very simple, yet beautiful illustrations grace the pages of this title.  I thought it would just be about daily life of the vikings, but at the end this story even touches on some of the more well-known gods.

This story is easily read independently.  I would recommend breaking it down over a period of a week, maybe even longer.  There is a lot of information packed into it.  We learned more about the way the Vikings seasoned their food and what utensils they used to eat.  Family life and homes are included, along with transportation and even what they did for jobs.

Written for grades 3 - 8, the If You Were Me and Lived in..... history series really opens your student's eyes to what life was like during these time periods.  They could very easily write a non-fiction report about all that they have learned from their reading.  They can be read independently or together for reading time.  The possibilities of creating a history study around these titles are endless.

We also received If You Were Me and Lived in....the Middle Ages and If You were Me and Lived In....Renaissance Italy:

Just like the others in this series, these books will whisk you and your child back in time.  They will read what life was like and the hardships people would face.  They will learn about the good times and how they celebrated, and what they celebrated.  They will learn about their jobs and how they took care of each other during these time periods.

Well illustrated and interesting reading is how I would describe these titles.  I learned quite a bit about each of these time periods while reading the stories with the kids.  I would highly recommend all of these titles that were brought to us by Awaywegomedia.com in the Carole P. Roman history series.  Not only are they a great addition to your homeschool, but they would also make wonderful gifts for those children who love to read and learn or even teachers that you know.

I can't wait until we start studying these time periods again and we break out our stories to give us more explanation about these time periods on a level that all kids will understand.

Several members of the Homeschool Review Crew were given the opportunity to try out several of the stories in the Carole P. Roman history series.  Take some time to read how they used these titles in their home and how they liked them also.
