Nina and Pinta Tour

We had a wonderful opportunity this week in the area.  The replicas of the Nina and the Pinta ships built by the Columbus Foundation were available for tour.

The Niña - Most Historically Accurate Columbus Replica Ship Ever Built

The Niña is a replica of the ship on which Columbus sailed across the Atlantic on his three voyages of discovery to the new world beginning in 1492.  Columbus sailed the tiny ship over 25,000 miles.  That ship was last heard of in 1501, but the new Niña has a different mission.  We are a floating museum, and we visit ports all over the Western Hemisphere.

Pinta - Our Second Columbus Replica Ship

Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours and has a 40 ft air conditioned main cabin down below with seating. Pinta is available for private parties and charters.

No life boats.  Just the ship's boats to take them to shore.  A fact I learned that day....The sailors did not know how to swim!!!  Why do you get on a boat to the unknown and not know how to swim?!?!?

The Captain was the only one who slept below deck and had his own small quarters.  It was very small.  The crew all slept on top deck.  The only other things below deck was livestock and supplies.

The rudder.

Lydia was amazed that this is how all things were carried.  In barrels, there was no Gladware bowls and Tupperware back then.

This anchor is actually dated from this era.

A look at the rudder from the deck.

Made us a little dizzy to look up.

The Ship's boat for the Pinta.  These boats took about 3 hours to get ready to use.  They were not used in emergency situations, such as for life boats.  It took way too long to get them ready.

We had a lot of fun touring these boats.  Gave a new respect to the actual size.  It was really funny though, as we walked up to the boats, Caty screams "we seeing the Pirate Ships!"
