Journeying through Ohio

The State that we chose for this week was Ohio.  

Ohio Fun Facts

• There are 7 presidents that were from the state of Ohio.
• Because there were so many presidents from Ohio, it was nicknamed the "Mother of Presidents."
• Akron is the biggest rubber-making city in the world.
• Ohio was originally inhabited by the Hopewell and Adena Mound Builders.  
• There are more than 10000 Indian mounds in the State of Ohio.
• Ohio was home to the first ambulance and police services in America
• Ohio was the first state made out of the Northwest Territory.
• Cleveland was home to America's first traffic light.
• Cleveland was the world's first city to be lighted electrically.

The kids chose to draw the state flag, guitar (for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), a ladybug, and a Rock for the Neil Armstrong Museum.


Then we made two Ohio-inspired snacks....


Sauerkraut Balls


I created my own gluten/soy/dairy/egg/pork free recipe.  I used Bob's Red Mill Cornbread mix, 1 pound of cooked ground beef and 1 can of sauerkraut.  I mixed this together and added enough water to still form the small balls of fry.  After it was mixed I put the mixture in the fridge to chill.  It'll look like very thick pancake batter.  Then I formed the balls and fried them in olive oil.  We served them with ketchup, honey mustard or a spicy mayo recipe. (serve them warm).  These were a hit with my hubby...and Joey even liked them.  I also added some salt to taste.

After dissecting a buckeye......

We made homemade buckeyes.....

We made enough to eat some ourselves and then as our contribution to the ballet recital party.  They were a hit at ballet class.  One of them about killed any type of sweet tooth you had.  I didn't use a "recipe", I just remember my aunt teaching me how to make them.  She made amazing buckeyes and peanut butter pinwheels!!!  


Our last project of the week was making tissue paper carnations.  I found the steps for this project at Folding Trees project blog.

We found out we live in an amazing state that is fullllll of learning opportunities.  We just need to find more time and money to explore them all!


No state study next week, we will be starting our Cyprus projects for World Travelers Club.
