Little House on the Prairie - The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder Review

How many remember watching Little House on the Prairie on televisions that did not have remotes.  I remember laying on the living room floor waiting for the next episode of the what was happening in the lives of the Ingalls family.  I wondered what Nellie would do to the girls next?  I still love watching this show and would love to visit the home sometime in the future with the girls.  In fact we are planning to start read-alouds with the books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder soon.

So I was super excited to be given the opportunity to watch....Little House on the Prairie The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder ($24.95) from Legacy Documentaries.  Between my love of the TV and book series and my love of History Documentaries, this seemed like the perfect choice for me!!

This hour long family documentary goes a step beyond the Little House on the Prairie.  The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder gives the true story of one of America's more iconic authors.  You think that you know the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder after you read the books and watch the TV show, but she has such a wonderful story as an author, wife and mother.

Dean Butler, who played her husband Almanzo in the television series, narrated and produced the documentary that features many details from Laura and Almanzo's life.  I watched this for the first time with my hubby, who was not a real big Little House on the Prairie fan, but said he actually enjoyed watching this and learning both Historical facts from the time period but also details and facts about her life.  I thought I had a little knowledge about her life, you know from my reading and watching the show, but WOW did I quickly find out how little I knew about Laura Ingalls Wilder.

One of my favorite things about this DVD was learning little facts about who the characters in the show matched up with in her books.  I also loved seeing all the photographs from her life.

Lydia also enjoyed the DVD and I can't wait to start reading this book series with her next Spring and bringing this video out again.  Maybe we'll even get to take our trip to see the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum.

Below you can watch an excerpt from the video....

Our family truly enjoyed this movie, and we will definitely be watching it again.  I am very grateful for the opportunity, but the only downfall that I see is the cost.  On a tight budget, the ability to purchase this video for just a few viewings would be a difficult choice for me.  I really know that it is worth it, but for some I know it would be hard.

Legacy Documentaries also produced and published a video on Almanzo, entitled Almanzo Wilder:  Life Before Laura ($21.95).  We didn't get a chance to review this title, but would like to share the information with you, since it is now on our wish list.

This DVD was produced in partnership between Dean Butler and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Association.  It looks at his early life, but also includes shots and footage from the television drama.  It gives new perspective to the "Farmer Boy" from Laura's acclaimed book series.

Several members of the Schoolhouse Review Crew were given the opportunity to review these DVDs from Legacy Documentaries.  Please take a few moments to visit the TOS Crew blogs and see what their families enjoyed and didn't enjoy about these movies.
