Homeschool Mother's Journal - Week 28

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week.....

Wow....what a week.  Joey had a bad allergic reaction to a medication that he has been on for a couple months now. But the dose was upped last Friday.  He was on it for 3 days and WHAM! he woke up violently ill and displaying signs of a stroke.  We were getting ready to take him to the ER when the stroke signs started.  So he got his first ride in an ambulance.  He actually could not move the right side of his body.  On the way to the hospital he appeared to have a seizure, so they re-routed to a closer hospital.  Quite scary!!!  He did awesome though, even when they had to put in an IV.  But right after that happened....boom his facial muscles started stiffening and his mouth contorted into a weird screaming shape and then he started screaming in pain.  They had to give him a relaxation medicine and then they gave him IV Benadryl and that helped almost instantly.  He had a CT Scan, chest x-rays and was eventually sent home after another dose of Benadryl and Cogenton to help with the reaction.  He was sent home on the Cogenton, and we had a rough afternoon.  He started feeling better though and we are very proud how calm he stayed considering all that he went through.  He actually asked a couple times if he was going to die.  I can't imagine the pain he was in for him to ask that of us.

In our homeschool this week....

Very light work.  Games and discussions.  Some educational TV.  Needless to say that with Joey's upset and Mom/Dad being so tired from being up watching him and making sure that he was ok...we did not have a full week.  Lydia did have fun at Scouts today.  We'll catch up...no big deal!

Where we are going and what we are doing...

Doctors appointments and doctors on speed dial were the call of this week.  Lydia did go to Girl Scouts today.  We were wondering if we were going to get to go, but all seems quiet for now in the house.  I keep praying that it stays that way!

My favorite thing this week....

Seeing Joey feeling good again.  Today he seems like his regular, overtalkative self.  I don't even mind that he is talking so fast that I can't even follow what he is saying completely.

What I am cooking....

Nothing!  The poor kids and Joe.  I have been exhausted.  We are eating quite simply.  It's a good thing our kids love soup and sandwiches.  Brayden has been thrilled that we have been allowing him to eat cereal for any meal he wants.  No one is starving.  I will have to make it up to them next week.

Things I am working on....

I have several things going right now.  Little projects for Special Olympics, Girl Scouts and I really want to re-work some school stuff for the kids.  But it requires some work on my part going through my little office area and actually organizing things.  I would also like to open back up our old eBay store.  But not sure how to do that yet.  Just waiting to see how much other stuff I get done in the next couple weeks.  The ebay thing needs to happen by the end of January.  We'll wait and see.

I'm reading....

Nothing right now.  But I am wanting to read The Help.  I am probably the only woman who hasn't read it yet.  But I don't want to see the movie until I read it.  So maybe over the next couple weeks too.  Maybe I will just get the book on cd instead.

A photo to share....

Our poor baby even after several doses of the antihistamine drugs....He could not open his right eye and his mouth keep contorting.  The towel was to catch the drooling that kept happening.  Fortunately that was all corrected by Wednesday morning.  (The scary part is that this is mild compared to earlier in the day.)
