Who says Fractions aren't fun?!?!?!

Our boys are struggling with fractions.  Even though Brayden is very good in Math, this is just a concept that he is having a hard time with.  We have a Pizza Fraction game that he enjoys playing, but both boys consider it too "babyish" for them.  Plus I really think the whole food thing distracts them too much and they think they should be eating the pizza slices instead of creating a pizza with them.


I really did forget how much of an impact fractions do make on your daily life.  It is a math skill that is needed in many jobs to perform basic tasks.  Fractions measure not only "pizza and cake" (those are Joey's words), but measure anything from liquids and dry goods you are baking with but also applies to items that you are measuring to cut for model projects.  Fractions are everywhere.  It was a basic skill that I took for granted.


We have attempted fractions several times, but the frustration levels just stay high.  So we were pretty excited to try this fraction card game.  Kids learn through play, and hey it's not a worksheet!!!



The object of the Fractazmic is to create as many "hands" as possible before a player runs out of cards.  The hands are made by adding together the fraction cards within a suit to equal 1.  The game is over when a player runs out of cards.  The winner is the player with the most hands.




This game really did help the boys out.  It gave them a more visual way of seeing fractions.  It travels well for killing time while waiting for doctor appointments or even in restaurants while waiting for food.  I know with repeated use both boys will continue to make progress in this area.  It was also a quicker moving game, so it didn't take a long time.  Very much able to keep their interest.

I thought this was cute.  Everytime we sat and played the game, our pug Rocky decided to be the guardian of the discard pile.....too cute!

I really like the portability of this this "game" and all the learning that is happening.  I wish we would have had this several months ago when we were attempting fractions the first time.  With the help of Fractazmic I cannot wait to see how much more quickly the boys catch on.  The cards are very sturdy and not cheaply made.  That's important in our house where cards can be bent very easily.
