Homeschool Travels - Library of Congress

Another beautiful fall day in DC....

 We hiked around the National Capitol to the Library of Congress.

 The architecture of this building was AMAZING!!!

 I have to say that the security staff was amazing.  I thought I was going to have to be a Mama Bear, because Brayden set off the detector and didn't understand what the guard was asking him.  He started to raise his voice to Brayden and I stepped up and told him that Brayden was autistic.  His tune changed quickly.  He lowered his voice and didn't try to approach Brayden nastily.  He let me explain to Brayden what he had to do.  Brayden responded well to that and we got through quickly at that point.  I thanked the guard for showing compassion and working with Brayden.  I wish more guards working security would be like this.  It gave me a heads up of what could be coming more my way in the future though.  So I need to keep working over scenarios in my mind about how to handle these situations without yelling.

 Brayden had just read about Thomas Jefferson the week before.  So it was great to see examples of his architectural design.

 There were displays all over displaying materials

 Inside the Main Library....

 Looking at the Gutenberg Bible.  This gave the kids an eye opener.  Back in May we visited the printing museum in Houston and they were able to use a model of a Gutenberg Press and print pages.

The architecture was unbelievable.

The Children's area was neat.  There was a puppet theater and lots of books to look at.

There was a exhibit on Bob Hope....who I never realized the kids did not even know existed.
