YWAM Publishing - Heroes of History - Alan Shepherd Higher and Faster Review

We have been working our way through the later years of American History this year.  We got the opportunity to review the book from the Heroes of History series, Alan Shepard - Higher and Faster ($9.99) from YWAM Publishing

Heroes of History - Alan Shepard Higher and Faster was written by Janet & Geoff Benge, and truly brought to his fascinating life to light.  It is part of the Heroes of History series written for students ages 10 and up.

Heroes of History - Alan Shepard Higher and Faster begins in his childhood and goes through his life story.  It presents the good and the bad points, and in a way that children can easily understand and not be overwhelmed to be reading.

I learned facts and read about struggles and triumphs in the story Heroes of History - Alan Shepard Higher and Faster that I never did read while in school.  We covered basics in what he did in history and that was it.  But Janet and Geoff Benge do an excellent job in presenting his life in a way to keep a child's attention and see why Alan Shepard has made such an impact on history.

We used Heroes of History - Alan Shepard Higher and Faster as a history read-along.  Joey actually read this book as part of his assigned reading.  Just like the other stories he has read from the Heroes of History series, He was able to read without difficulty and comprehension was not a struggle for him either.  The Heroes of History series has been a staple in our house for many years, and will continue to be a relied upon resource in our history studies.

Something wonderful that YWAM Publishing also offers for users of the Heroes of History series are easy-to-use Unit Study Curriculum Guides.  There is a Unit Study Curriculum Guide a available for Heroes of History - Alan Shepard High and Faster, for only $9.99, you can turn your history reading of Alan Shepard into a full unit study.

Included in the Unit Study Curriculum Guides are not only comprehension questions to go along with the chapters you are reading, but also ideas on making this single book into a whole study including creating a display corner with items that would make your student remember and learn more about him.  Ideas for creative writing and essay projects are included, as well as hands-on projects ideas to bring this story not only in history but also into your science studies.  They have even included ideas for art and crafts to go along with this story.  The only thing missing is math, and you could include that also by building rockets and figuring trajectory.

We have had the ability to read several books from the Heroes of History series.  And the story of Alan Shepard did not disappoint.  If you have a child who loves space, wants to be an astronaut or even if you are just studying space in science or history, I highly recommend using Heroes of History series, Alan Shepard - Higher and Faster.

If you are looking to take a little break from your regular studies or just need a lesson planning break this summer, be sure to take a look at any of the Heroes of History Series from YWAM Publishing.  You will not be disappointed and you can shuffle the stories around in any order that you want.  Follow a timeline or jump around history.

Several members of the Homeschool Review Crew were given the opportunity to review titles from the Heroes of History Series and Christian Heroes:  Then & Now Series.  Take some time to read how they used this series in their homes and what they would recommend.
