Carole P. Roman If You Were Me and Lived on .... Series Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We are HUGE fans of books written by Carole P. Roman.  We had the opportunity to review some more amazing titles from the If You Were ..... Carole P. Roman assorted series including If You Were Me and Lived on .... Mars, If You Were Me And Lived In .....The American West, If You Were Me and Lived in .... Colonial America, and If You Were Me and Lived in ... Cuba.  We were not disappointed.

If You Were Me and Lived In ... Colonial America fit in great with our American History units.  It based on what life was like for the Pilgrims in early America, when they first arrived.  It is written from view of a child of these new colonists and what life was like on the ship over and that first year.  It is written from a positive tone, but you can still almost feel the uneasiness that these young ones would have felt watching and helping their parents with all the hard work just to stay alive.

If You Were Me and Lived In ... Colonial America is a non-fiction story.  There are several extras included in this book, including information on some of the most well-known early colonists.

The illustrations are full color and do have an attention grabbing look.

If You Were Me and Lived in .... The American West covers exactly what that title speaks.  It's a wonderful story about a child whose family is heading west in the 1800s.  Carole does a wonderful job bringing life on the trail and setting up a new homestead to life for children.

Caty really liked the illustrations in this book.  She said that it almost felt like she was reading a graphic novel.

Again in the final pages of this book, there is biography information about many famous residents of the American West, and a short description about why they are important to know about.

And of course a Glossary of terms

Lydia absolutely loved If You Were Me and Lived On .... Mars

She is all about studying space right now.  In fact she is turning her study into her 4H project even.  If You Were Me and Lived On .... Mars is about what life would be like if we were to colonize Mars.  It fit in perfect with her study of the red planet.  She went around all week sharing facts about the mountains and other information she learned in this book.

We talked about biospheres and how they are already experimenting with this technology on Earth.

The glossary pages were interesting.

The If You Were Me and Lived ..... series has been written for students roughly ages 8-14.  I honestly think this is a perfect age range.  They are written non-fiction, but have a story undertone.  It makes historical reading more fun for kids that just do not like to read or study history.  The If You Were Me and Lived On .... Mars is more of a science study, but it could fit into modern/future historical studies too.

You could use the If You Were Me and Lived ..... series from Ancient history through modern day.  Carole P. Roman has written a wide range in this series.  You can use them along with any history curriculum you are using, or as part of your actual study maybe you are creating on your own.  They are packed full of information in a way that is not overwhelming.  (If this was the case, Lydia would not continue to love these books.  She cannot handle stories that are overwhelming.)

Carole also have a wonderful geography series that will allow you to tour around the world.  We also had the opportunity to read

This country is a mystery to many, since during most of our lifetime it has been shut off from tourists and visitors.  Carole does a wonderful job to open student's eyes to this beautiful country and all that it offers.

Like I mentioned earlier, we have always loved Carole P. Roman books.  Her silly stories of Oh Susanna have left Caty in stitches.  The Geography series has allowed us to travel the world.  And the History If You Were Me and Lived ..... series has been a great add to our studies of ancient history and now into modern American history.  I am very grateful to have been introduced to her books a few years ago.  And even as the girls age, we are going to continue to use them.  They are great for kids with learning disabilities, since they really open their eyes to the areas of time and the world they are covering.

Visit the Carole P. Roman page and see all that she has to offer your family.
