Trying to keep my 15 year old organized

So how do I teach a 15 year old to be organized, when I have a hard time myself???

This is a struggle for me lately.  He is perfectly capable of independent work now, and he is working at grade level in several of his subjects.  So now we have to work on organization more.  Here are a few things that we are doing to help him out.

A few years ago I remember Homeschool workboxes being the rage.  EVERYONE wanted those scrapbook carts ready to go with the neat number system.  A drawer for each subject.  I fell on the bandwagon and bought each of our school-aged kiddos a set, and then realized I needed one for Caty too.  I had a drawer for each subject/activity.  Then we had trouble with storage, so I switched the boys from the large carts to a file folder box.  This worked ok for a while, until their books took up more space than was available.

My next step was that I had a cube shelf that held all their books.  They had a folder on top that held their to-do list and then they were responsible to get their books off the shelf that they needed.  I kept other things in it, like activity books for them and extra reading books.  This has worked for a while.  But I finally decided after some remodeling in our house that I stacks of books were not really working.  On top of the fact that Joey and Brayden kept mixing their books up on the shelves.  they also do not stay in one spot everyday to do their schoolwork.  Sometimes it's the couch, sometimes their room, sometimes even in our office.  So we needed to make their work more portable.

After watching them for a few days, I decided that backpacks was the way to go for all the kids.  They could easily move their schoolbooks around the house or even in the van.  So if we are on a trip or have an appointment, it is easy to grab their bag and go.  The only thing I would need to worry about is grabbing extra pencils/pens or crayons and colored pencils.

We have been doing this for about two months now, and so far it is working.  I still find books that get missed as I am walking through rooms, but I just remind them to go and put it in their backpack.  Everything is then kept in the corner of the living room.

I had been giving the boys a weekly lists of their assignments in a table format that I created in Microsoft Word.  I found that they were not finishing all their work daily.  They would double up on assignments by the end of the week to catch up, and this led to them rushing and not doing the work correctly.  After reading a post about using a spiral notebook for daily assignments, I thought we would give that a try.

I bought them notebooks that had their favorite interests on them, just because I can and it made it more fun!  And I started our journey of this organization method for their schoolwork.

Currently I put individual assignments, group subjects and even include activities we will be going to that day.  If there is a chore he needs to complete, I put that on there too.  Some days it might say, Sweep and Mop the Hallway or Sweep and Mop your bedroom floor.

This method seems to be working really well.  It's been almost two months since we started, and even though he misses a few assignments sometimes, he is getting his work done and even reminding me about group project starting times.

This is how we are teaching Joey to keep himself organized.  I am working my way up to him creating his own to-do list, but I want him to follow this method for a few months until he is used to it.  At that point, then I will hand him the reigns and see how he does on his own.  Since Joey struggles with short-term memory issues, this will be something that we are working on for a little while.

Our workboxes for the New Year

I have been using workboxes again to get things a little more organized.  The girls have actual drawers again.  I fill 5 drawers each, and use the bottom drawers for storing materials.  (Forgive the pics...I am learning how to use my iPhone camera..lol).  This is the girls boxes this next week.  Because of all the running, we have been doing schoolwork on the weekends to make up for our days off and field trips.  I am not completely cruel though....lol.  I have been working with them about an hour or two a day.

Lydia's boxes....
Math---practice using a number line for addition.
Her Artist study--I am making her do her project over because she got an attitude and did not complete the assignment correctly.  So we will be doing this one again.  Usually we do one day a week where we talk about artists.
American Girl drawer - Lake Michigan and Caroline books.  I have a DVD on Lake Michigan and one on the Great Lakes that we will be watching this week also.
I printed the Homeschool Share lapbook for her.  We did not get the Shark book I wanted from the library yet, so we are using National Geographic website and Books.  And this shark site also.  We are also watching old Shark Week episodes on Netflix.  She has started carrying around her stuffed shark she got from the St. Louis Zoo.
This drawer holds a couple subjects.  It has phonics, grammar and her journal for handwriting.
I didn't get a picture of Caty's full set of boxes, but they are the same as Lydia's...except black.

Drawer #1---Math.  She had two options I will be switching out.  Her roll the dice and cover the dots and also pipe cleaners and pony beads.
Drawer #2 is Fine Motor - Here is a playdough activity.  She will make mini-marshmallows for the hot cocoa with playdough...maybe I'll make a small batch of hot cocoa playdough just for this...lol.  Also will be zipping activity and sock skills!
Drawer #3 - Letter D this week.  It has another playdough activity card.  Her Alphatales (which she LOVES!!)...and her Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Alphabet writing book.
Drawer #4 - She wanted to learn about Goldfish this week...
Drawer#5 - Her Scholastic News, this week it's on the Arctic and Antarctica regions.  I also found this snow book at the library for her.

The boys have opted out of the "drawers" style, they wanted boxes that held their items.  So I found these two different boxes on a Facebook group that is like an Online Garage Sale.

I type out what is expected of them each day, so they can check off as they finish.  This is an easy day for him.  They typically only work on grammar twice a week.  History is 2 times a week.  He prefers Brain Pop for Science right now.  It's more work for me in prep to go this route, but for the most part they are getting their work done.
I keep all the materials they need right behind the direction sheet.  I also include user name and password for any assigned materials online.

Joey's box loaded and ready to go also.
This is how the kiddos have requested to try things for the second half of the year.  So I guess we'll see how it goes!

Schooling this week.....

We are having a regular week.  The boys are working on BIG IQ Kids for math, spelling, and states.

The boys are working on grammar...currently punctuation with questions, statements, and exclamation points.  Joey is even typing a diary into his iPad....that was cool to see him do the other day.

We finished our State Geography of Tennessee today by cooking our Tennessee meal.
We will be studying Indiana next.  (Joey chose it since he remembers living there.)

Lydia finally finished her -at and -an phonics/reading lesson from the Moffat Girls shop, so we will be beginning Lesson 2. -ip and -ig.

For Science we will be working on the Human Body.  We have our Magic School Bus kit ready and our Teacher Created Resources book.  We will be working on this together for the next couple weeks.

My Body (Science Books S)
We will not be doing History this week because we have two field trips and a doctor appointment for the boys also. Wednesday is Homeschool Day at the zoo, and we are going as a family. Daddy took the day off!!!

We have our first meeting on Felicity this week.  We are very excited to make our Mobb caps and coral bracelets.  We will also be playing with the toys of that era.  Lydia and I finished reading Book 1 and starting Book 2 tomorrow.  We are running bit behind on this one.  We are planning the at-home activities to go with this book series.  We are going to make our doll dresses, pomander balls, candles, and our own Game of Graces.

We will also be watching a show on Johnny Appleseed and working on our LEGO Club challenge.  Watching some items on space right now.

Sorry, not alot of pictures....same stuff we have been doing for a couple weeks now.  Science will be new this week though!  We are just getting back into the swing of being home.

Have a great week!!
