We almost got everything done this week!!!  Joey had a couple of rough days, and didn't finish his science reading.  So we will catch that up this next week.  Since I have to do his 4-H project with him hands on, we were short 1/2 the lesson.  Daddy finished the other half with him.

Brayden also did all his work, including watching an Animated Hero Classic about Ben Franklin on You Tube.

I wanted Joey to watch the same video, and this is how I caught him watching it at lunch (since lunchtime equals free computer time)....he had Minecraft on his laptop, the Youtube video going on his iPad and his lunch right next to him....ugh...but at least he could tell me about Ben Franklin.

Lydia loves drawing...this was us as dogs...lol

She loves art class too.  She had to do Caty's art study this week (since she didn't have one due to the abbreviated school week).  Caty was learning about colors similar to Henri Matisse, The Snail.

Lydia has decided to step back from Headsprout phonics again.  So we are working our way through A Beka Letters and Sounds and using the old McGuffey Readers.  She is doing a lesson in the book a day.  She has started remembering more.  So I just go with what she wants to do....she's obviously learning.  She doesn't remember the phonics rules though sometimes when she is trying to sound out words.  So it still frustrates her.

We did this Science activity on Sunday, after Last weeks post.  It was her science project about prey/predators....we hid red/green M&Ms in color bits of paper.  Some were easy to find, while others were more difficult.

She learned about various members of the canine family in science, so we watched Old Yeller as a treat when she finished her work.  She really liked this movie!

Sunday, Lydia cooked lunch with Daddy's help.

We did a couple science experiments.  We tried to throw water in the air to make it freeze...and did frozen bubbles.  The frozen bubbles was a full success...not so much our water though.

Our American Girl Club hosted local historian, Clinton Mauk.  He talked to the girls about the importance of our area in the War of 1812.

Joey has District Cheerleading competition this weekend in Lexington, KY.   This was our drive through Ohio yesterday....yucky!  Yucky!!  part of the way.  We feared Kentucky because we kept hearing about an ice storm...but the roads were better once were crossed into Kentucky.  Could actually go the speed limit...lol.

Tried to walk some energy out at the mall by our hotel.  Our kids ARE NOT accustomed to visiting a mall at all!!  We avoid them because of the massive sensory overload involved.  I thought Caty was going to flip out there was so much to see.

I couldn't figure out why there was a Hermit Crab kiosk...seriously?!?!  I always buy hermit crabs in Lexington, KY...does anyone else?  But Caty thought this was so cool!

Eating dinner....the girls chose soft pretzels the size of their heads.

Joey chose a steak sandwich, after I eliminated how much he could not have.  The people at the restaurant were very nice with all my allergen questions.  He enjoyed the sandwich.

Brayden refused to eat there....too many unfamiliar restaurants.  He wanted McDonald's.  I swear...McDonald's is like crack for kids with autism.  He has to have 6 chicken nuggets.  No more..no less.  Ugh....I know it will be like this our whole trip.  Brayden gets a food obsession and will only eat that during the whole trip.  Not sure what it  may be.  I think it will revolve around chicken and Reese's Puffs.  I'll let you know.  But he has had Chicken McNuggets for 3 meals now....so you can see where this is going.  When we get settled in at Brentwood later tonight, he'll relax a lot more.

Our Weekly Adventures in Pictures - Week 28

This is how our week started.  Caty was rather croupy and everyone seemed sniffly and snotty.  But it only seemed to last a few days.  I ran the vaporizer with meds around the clock.  It seems to help every time.

We have a cool addition to our classroom.  My brother and sister-in-law were selling this x-ray light box, so we got it!  So far we haven't done much with it yet.  Lydia is working on her Geography project to go along with our American Girl reading.  We started reading Caroline, and studying the Great Lakes.

Lydia wanted to start online phonics again, so we started back with Headsprout.  I included her own site words and activities to reinforce.  Here she is working on a word ladder that I printed from Confessions of a Homeschooler.  I laminated the sheets and put them in a binder that we keep with her workboxes.

Lydia is also working on place value...in her Math Mammoth they are trying to teach a simple way to add double digits.  The trick requires separating numbers into place value.  For some reason she is struggling with the concept.  So we spent 3 days just working on place value through hundreds.

Lydia is very proud of her gel pen set.  She will do her handwriting without too much complaint.

Another addition for Lydia is an easy Word Search puzzle book.  She is really enjoying these types of puzzles now.

 The kids each received a really big gift from Grandpa and Grandma last week.  So being behind as always, we just now got thank you notes ready.  Here Lydia is sitting with one of her presents she bought with the money they gave her (she bought her first American Girl Doll - Julie....Kit is mine..lol)

The boys had their regular work, and Joey is continuing his study of weather.  Only a couple weeks before we get to see and talk with a Meteorologist from a local news station.  Here are a couple books he read this week, and he also watched a Magic School Bus episode on weather.  Brain POP has been a life-saver this week, because their science videos are great.  Joey and Brayden watched a lot of videos based on their respective science themes.

I found this math game during my decluttering....I downloaded this over 4 years ago when I first started homeschooling.  There is no name on it and I lost the original file, so if this game happens to be yours, please let me know and I will give you credit.

Each popcorn kernel has a simple addition problem on it.  I had these old popcorn bags that they can sort the kernels into.  Lydia is learning to use a number line.  So I included her hundreds chart to help her out.

You'll need a bar of Ivory Soap...and paper towel or a dish.

Unwrap the bar, and microwave the soap for 1 minute.

Make sure to watch what is happening....

Because it makes a major transformation!

Brayden stayed out of pictures this week, except when I was getting his picture with his DS for his thank you card.  Brayden did his schoolwork reluctantly.  But he did finish his book and questions on Ben Franklin.  He worked on his Thank you note, and finished all his math.  He watched videos on animal migration and hibernation this week.  I have been using the Brain Pop Jr. Science with him.  He watches the videos and then we discuss them.  He enjoys them, and I just work around his interests...lol.

Next week, we are going to play games and read.  It's going to be a reading week here.  The library books are all stocked and the Kindles are loaded up...lol.

Our Week in Pictures - Week 27

We had a full week...and I was so happy that we were able to finish everything I had down in the planner.  I was careful as to how much I put in the lessons.  I figured it was easier to add a video or project at the last minute instead of feel bad because we fell behind.

We had Art Class on Monday.  We learned how shapes can help us with our drawing skills.

Caty started "school" again this week.  I apologize because there's a lot of Caty pics this week.  The boys kept to themselves, and asked for help a couple times.  But they pretty much just stayed quiet.

Our theme this week was Cows.  The letter A, and the number 1.  This was a cow we did by tearing construction paper.  She needed help.  Caty has super short and chunky fingers.  She has some trouble with fine motor skills because of this.  I am hoping that these kinds of projects will help her.

 I set our easel up in the living room to help show her what she is accomplishing.  When we need it to paint, I just turn it around and they can use the other side for painting.

 We used our wooden blocks to try and fill the square.  She knows her shapes, so this is all review.  I am forcing her to look at the world around her and see what shapes are around her.

 Then she decided to do one of the pattern blocks that came with her set.

 We found this great program for my Kindle Fire.  Only $1.99.  Caty is really, really enjoying it.  I pull out my Kindle as a treat as we are doing school.

Lydia's science experiment was dealing with inertia.  It was an egg drop.

We made a Thank you Card for the cows and all we can get from them.

 Lydia's artist this week was Winslow Henry...here she is painting a seascape with watercolor crayons.

 Fine motor skill practice.  I went to Goodwill and bought some clothes for her to practice buttoning, zipping, and snapping.  Cost....$3.00.  Montessori boards for the same activity....$75.00.  Saving $70.00 is priceless!!!  Here Caty is intently working on those big buttons.

 Our letter sound...A.  She recognizes almost all her letters.  So I am emphasizing letter sounds.  These Alphatales books from Scholastic are wonderful!!!

We are using the letter block cards from Confessions of a Homeschooler.

 We made a handprint alligator and an alligator clothespin.

 Lydia is using Draw Write Now.  She is doing well, as long as I let her use her own lined notebook.  Not the workbook they sell.  It's PJ day...and she's working on her handwriting.

 We are doing card math....

 And Lydia is learning how to play Sudoku.....She really likes this.  I am currently planning 3 days of math book work and then 2 days of review and games each week.  They have all switched to Math Mammoth currently.

 At gymnastics....Lydia finally conquered the cartwheel!!!  She was super excited!
